Operation Help a Hero Service Project

Posted on May 14 2012 - 11:26am

Operation Rack Pack is an Operation Help a Hero project focused on welcoming home young, single service members returning from months abroad to barracks rooms. Many young service members return with only the belongings they carry and have no one to greet them. The Operation Rack Pack project provides these young heroes with a means to clean themselves up, eat and relax their first night home without having to go to the store or storage. Volunteers add personalized welcome home sentiments and gifts of appreciation to show these newly returned men and women their service is appreciated.

Sunday, June 10, 2012 from 12-4pm

1/4 Marines and Sailors returning from the 31st MEU

Volunteers work together to:

  • Clean and prepare barracks rooms for returning Marines and Sailors
  • Make beds (racks) with fresh linens
  • Create welcome home gift bags with toiletries, snack foods, entertainment items and clothing.
  • Fill refrigerators with  drinks, waiting chilled for each returning hero
  • Place "kitchen kits" and microwaveable foods in their food prep area
  • Stage hand towels/toiletries  and hand soap in the bathrooms, to give the rooms a feel of home
  • Hang welcome home posters and leave welcome home notes
  • Stage entertainment items in each room -- magazines, DVDs, cards, books and more.
  • Leave clean towels and wash cloths on each bed
  • Place fresh baked goods in rooms for each returning service member

At the end of each ORP volunteer day, the barracks rooms truly send a clear message of support and appreciation. These small gestures enable each Marine and Sailor to feel a "slice of home" and a sense of pride in knowing they are appreciated.

Troop 1618 would like to show their support by collecting $10 food gift cards (Subway, Carls Jr and Sonic are closest to these Marines/Sailors... but they also love In and Out, Jack in the Box and Philly's Best).  If you want to participate, please bring your gift cards to the June 5th troop meeting.  Cards can be turned into Bonnie Cora.

If you would like to participate in the service project, please register by June 6th.  Scouts and adults are welcome.  We'll be forming a carpool and will release information closer to the date.  Please plan on wearing your Class B's!

Anyone can sign up BUT the barracks are NOT safe for small children. For this reason, we have an age limit of 8 and up. All children between 8 and 18 are required to be with a parent/adult guardian at all times. We respectfully ask for alternative arrangements to be made for children under the age of 8. Thank you for understanding that we do this for the safety and productivity of our volunteers.

Call for action from OHH

Operation Help a Hero has asked for the help of 1618 in securing gently used DVD's for the Marines returning over the next two months.

Go through your collection and if you have a DVD you would like to share with a 18-23 year old (male) Marine - please consider donating it!  New DVDs are certainly welcome, too!

Collections will be ongoing through the last troop meeting before summer break.

Contact Bonnie Cora with any questions.

Medic! Is there a MEDIC in the house??

Posted on May 10 2012 - 11:29pm

Saddleback Day Camp is in need of a medic for this summer's day camp.

Unfortunately, a medic has not been secured as of this date.  If a medic is not found, there will be no Day Camp!  With more than 2,000 people attending day camp in some capacity, the need for a medic is great.

Please reach out to anyone you know who might be able to fill this position.

Use this link: http://saddlebackdaycamp.org/mail/dawn.php if you are able to help with this need.
